2020 Wolves of the World Puerto Rico Program

Dear Families, Friends, and Travelers – Welcome to the 2020 Wolves of the World Puerto Rico Program!  We have created two webpages dedicated to this once in a lifetime experience so that travelers are as informed as possible throughout the process. The first page, Pre-Enrollment, is meant to share exciting details, highlights, and pertinent info, that participants will want to know before enrolling. Once enrolled, the Post-Enrollment page is intended to prepare travelers for participation on the adventure ahead. Please be sure to review the information on the appropriate page thoroughly and get excited for Puerto Rico! Viva la isla del encanto!

Puerto Rico Service Adventure

Recipe: Start with a picturesque tropical island, sprinkle in perfect white sand beaches and turquoise water, add lush rainforest and bioluminescent bays and stir in islets, rushing rivers, coral reefs and misty mountains. Let sit for centuries, and then mix in indigenous cultures, Spanish explorers, amazing colonial architecture, salsa music, delicious roasted pig and pinchos, a buzzing metropolis, tranquil surf towns, baseball and a complicated relationship with a super power neighbor. Serve with a short flight, no need for passport or foreign currency, and enjoy! Puerto Rico offers the perfect meal to any explorer hungry for a tropical paradise, improving their Spanish with friendly, passionate neighbors and losing themself in the “Land of Enchantment.”

The Itinerary


We do everything possible to run safe, engaging, and immersive programs for our travelers and given the unpredictable nature of international travel we must remain flexible in our planning. Changes to a schedule are uncommon but, we reserve the right to adjust programming in the best interest of the group.

March 28USA - San Juan, Puerto RicoToday we will depart the US for San Juan, Puerto Rico! Upon arrival in San Juan, we will unpack at our comfortable hotel and have our arrival dinner and first orientation meeting ahead of our weeks adventure.Conturce Hostel
March 29San JuanWe will begin the day with a morning meeting with a Puerto Rican historian to learn more about Puerto Rico's unique relationship within the US. We will then take time to explore and visit more of San Juan's famous sites including San José Church, La Fortaleza, Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, Capitol Building, Paseo de la Princesa and El Morro, the oldest Spanish fortification in the Caribbean. During the afternoon, we will have an exchange experience with students from a local school where DSST College View High School has connections. This is a great moment to practice and learn more Spanish while interacting in a whole different school environment. At night we will have dinner in the city before getting ready to our service adventure next morning.Conturce Hostel
March 30San Juan & Las MariasToday we will leave the capital city for Las Marias, a small community in the west mountains of Puerto Rico, which is approximately a four hour bus drive. We will have lunch on our way at Frutos de Guacabo Farm, where the group will learn about the farm-to-table movement, will tour around the property and will have a workshop about goat milk production. After the tour lunch will be provided using ingredients from the farm. Upon arrival to our cabins, we will settle in, talk about the project and get ready for this next days. March 31La Marias & BucarabonesThis morning we will begin service work alongside an organization that was created in the wake of Hurricane Maria called CAMBU (Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Bucarabones Unidos). Bucarabones is a small barrio located in the municipality of Las Marias and is home to about 700 people. After the devastation of Hurricane Maria, the community of Bucarabones took recovery matters into their own hands and formed their own community center which has brought an incredible amount of positive change to the community. In addition to helping the community recover after the hurricane, CAMBU has brought a renewed sense of community to the barrio as well as a physical space for community members to participate in workshops. After our service project orientation in the morning, we will begin work on the project.Las Marias Cabins

April 3San Juan & PiñonesToday we will depart early bound for El Yunque, the only tropical rain forest in the US National Forest System. We will hike through the amazing trail system and swim under hidden waterfalls. In the afternoon, we will visit Luquillo, a picturesque white sand beach with calm turquoise water. Once the sun goes down, we will visit Luquillo's famous snack street for dinner. This evening, we will have our farewell dinner and reflect on our time in Puerto Rico before our departure for the USA tomorrow morning.Conturce Hostel

Accommodations


In order to provide a safe and memorable experience, we follow strict guidelines when choosing program accommodations. Walking Tree partners with hotels and guest houses which are centrally located, clean and safe.  We vet and inspect the accommodations to ensure they uphold the ethos of our programs, are great values for our travelers and nice places to rest after enriching days of travel.  

Below are the accommodations we anticipate using on your trip, subject to availability. 
Conturce Hotel

The hotel is designed for travelers from different places and cultures to share in common spaces, in an atmosphere of fellowship and camaraderie. Located in the heart of urban San Juan, hostel guests have easy access to many cultural places of interest. Free Wi-Fi keeps guests feeling connected at all times. Students will be grouped in their rooms according to gender.

Parador y Area Recreativa Adrian Heriberto Acevedo Cruz

This location boasts a beautiful and relaxing stay among nature in Las Marias community.  This recreational center counts with several cabins with two rooms equipped with several beds and bunk beds perfects for hosting groups. Each cabin is also equipped with a kitchen and  showers.  The cabins do NOT include beddings or pillows so student must bring their own.  The center is surrounded by nature and has several outdoor spaces, a river and rest areas. Students will be grouped in their rooms according to gender and availability.

Your Adventure Includes

Estimated Airfare

In order to give our travelers the best possible price, we break out airfare from the Program Tuition. We will still handle all booking and ticketing via our flight partner who has access to special fares not available to the general public. Once confirmed, you will be invoiced for the flight roughly 75 days prior to travel. 

Program Tuition Excludes: Travel insurance, baggage fees, passport/visa fees, laundry, souvenirs, and activities not listed on itinerary.
