After a long week of traveling, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to get some extra sleep before the start of our final day. Well rested and ready to go, we kicked off our day by visiting the Resistance Museum, the Jewish Theater, and the National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam’s Jewish Quarter. After spending some free time to grab lunch, we continued our day by visiting the museum district, where we started by seeing Amsterdam’s iconic Rijksmuseum.

After some time engaging with centuries of art, many of us, including myself, took the opportunity to ride bikes around Amsterdam’s buzzing streets and Central Park; to do so, I had to teach myself how to ride a bike, which was an unforgettable experience, learning in such a beautiful and iconic environment.

Finally, to celebrate our trip, we went for our final group dinner, where we were served with an outstanding piece of filet, before returning back to our hotel.

Our experience at the Anne Frank House was incredibly moving. Hana pointed out something that I lingered on after our visit: because of how much early education about the Holocaust is centered around Anne Frank’s experience, it is easy to become desensitized to the abhorrent conditions the Frank family faced because of the way their experience is almost mythologized through this limited perspective.

However, upon spending time in the tiny Annex stripped that layer of mythology away, exposing the cruel reality the family endured for more than two years. Additionally, I found it moving to see the preserved relics of Anne Frank’s girlhood.

Despite the horrible circumstances she was faced with, I found it to be a unifying force between every girl who knows of her story or visits the Annex, can feel connected to”

Today was a day of travel.

A relatively early breakfast, then a one-hour bus transfer to Munich airport.

Plenty of time after checking in to enjoy the shops and cafés of the airport before the 90-minute flight to Amsterdam. Straight to the hotel to get a late nearby, then checking into our rooms and relaxing before learning the Dutch capital’s public transport into the centre of the city for a yummy Asian fusion dinner, typical of this multicultural city.

Today we woke up and took a walking tour of Munich’s old city, seeing the historic sites and places across the town. Following this, we stopped at the Munich documentation centre, where we had a refresher on the rise of nazism relevant to the city specifically.

After the museum, the group split in tw,o with some students going to a Bayern game and others opting for free time in the old city.

Dinner was traditional Bavarian cuisine.

Dachau was an incredibly moving experience, and being able to feel and live through this terrible bloodshed changed how I think about Germany. Emphasize on history not repeating itself is a major takeaway, and a lesson to be learned.

Being able to start with this eye-opening experience was an impactful and well-thought-out way to start the trip, and more is sure to come.
