Morocco Cultural Journey
Situated at the northern most extreme of Africa, Morocco has long attracted travelers who are lured by tales of its exotic markets, endless desserts, alluring coastline, and rugged mountains. Today it is a country that finds itself cautiously entering the 21st century while remaining loyal to deeply traditional roots. Upon arrival one is immediately captivated by the geographic diversity of Morocco’s landscapes. Whether navigating the heaving bazaar in Fez, winding your way through the narrow and tightly packed back alleys of Marrakech’s medina, surfing the perfect breaks of Essauira’s beaches, or hiking in the Rif mountains above the charming village of Chefchaouan, you will be entranced by amazing Morocco.
Cultural Journeys
Cultural Journeys provide deep insight into the history, culture, and natural heritage of our host countries through authentic immersive experiences. Students will explore ancient ruins, sample new foods, and develop valuable leadership skills.

The Itinerary
We do everything possible to run safe, engaging, and immersive programs for our travelers, but given the unpredictable nature of international travel we must remain flexible in our planning. Changes to a schedule are uncommon but if inclement weather pushes us off course or an unexpected opportunity arises which travelers are excited about, we reserve the right to adjust programming in the best interest of the group.
Day | Location | Description | Lodging |
---|---|---|---|
March 25 | USA - Morocco | Today the group will travel from the US to Morocco! We will likely arrive the next day (see day 2). | Airplane |
March 26 | Casablanca | Group arrives in Casablanca and will be privately transported back to their hotel where a Darija (Moroccan Arabic) orientation will be presented to them by our Moroccan Program Leaders! | Casablanca Riad |
March 27 | Casablanca - Moulay Idriss Zerhoun | After breakfast around mid-morning, students will start their Moroccan adventure by visiting the Hassan II Mosque; the largest mosque in Morocco and the 13th largest in the world (its minaret is the world's tallest at 689 ft.). The walls are composed of handcrafted marble and the roof is retractable; it also stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic Ocean, allowing worshippers to pray over the sea. Students will take a guided tour inside the mosque and then pair up in groups to photograph and explore its stunning exterior architecture. Afterwards, the group will be privately transported to Meknes. | Meknes Riad |
March 28 | Meknes - Moulay Idriss + Volubilis | The group will take a guided tour though Meknes in the morning and Moulay Idris come the afternoon. This holy town holds a special place in the hearts of Moroccans; it was here that Moulay Idriss I arrived in 789, bringing with him the religion of Islam, and starting a new dynasty. The day will end with a visit to the Archaeological Site of Volubilis. Volubilis contains essentially Roman vestiges of a fortified municipium built on a commanding site at the foot of the Jebel Zerhoun. Covering an area of 42 hectares, it is of outstanding importance demonstrating urban development and Romanization at the frontiers of the Roman Empire and the graphic illustration of the interface between the Roman and indigenous cultures. Because of its isolation and the fact that it had not been occupied for nearly a thousand years, it presents an important level of authenticity. It is one of the richest sites of this period in North Africa, not only for its ruins but also for the great wealth of its epigraphic evidence. Students will descover the archaeological vestiges of this site and bear witness to several civilizations. A group reflection will be held here. | Meknes Riad |
March 29 | Meknes - Almkal | The group will depart early for their homestay in a local Berber village in the High Atlas Mountains. Students will eat in the town of Almkal upon arrival. The rest of the day will consist of activities where the students will interact with the locals! | Homestay Families |
March 30 | Host Community | The homestay portion of our trip represents the heart and soul of the program. Students will spend the mornings and afternoons either working alongside locals on a community service project or on cultural excursions around the area or doing group activities, while leaving sufficient free time in the evenings to interact with our hosts! Details about the activities and community project will be discussed closer to your program start date. | Homestay Families |
March 31 | Host Community | Service work, cultural excursions or group activities by day, free time to hang in the village and dine with our families in the evening. Details of this day forthcoming. | Homestay Families |
April 1 | Host Community | Service work, cultural excursions or group activities by day (details forthcoming). This evening we will celebrate our time spent in the community getting to know our hosts with a special meal and farewell party. | Homestay Families |
April 2 | Almkal - Marrakech | After breakfast the group will say their goodbyes and head back to Marrakech. This afternoon we will embark on a photographic scavenger hunt before our farewell dinner and final group reflection discussion. | Marrakech Riad |
April 3 | Morocco - USA | Departure from Marrakech for the airport to make catch our international flight home. | Your own bed, eventually! |
