The Itinerary
We do everything possible to abide by itineraries as originally planned, but decades of experience teaches that we must be flexible in our planning. Changes to a trip’s schedule are uncommon, but Walking Tree reserves the right to make adjustments to programming in the best interest of the group.
| Day | Location | Description | Lodging |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | USA - Iceland | We will begin our unforgettable journey as we depart on an overnight flight to Iceland. As we travel across the Atlantic Ocean, we will anticipate a week filled with glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences together. | Airplane |
| Day 2 | Reykjavik - Reykjanes Peninsula – Blue Lagoon | After arriving early in the morning in Reykjavik, we will immediately begin exploring the dramatic Reykjanes Peninsula, a region known for its steaming geothermal fields, rugged lava landscapes, and windswept coastline. We will witness bubbling mud pools and powerful steam vents that showcase Iceland’s volcanic power. Later, we will unwind at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where we will soak in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by striking black lava rock. This relaxing experience will help us recharge while introducing us to one of Iceland’s most iconic attractions. In the evening, we will travel to the Selfoss or Hveragerdi area for a comfortable overnight stay. | Selfoss or Hveragerdi Hotel |
| Day 3 | Golden Circle – Fridheimar – Kerid Crater | We will set out to explore the famous Golden Circle, beginning at Thingvellir National Park, where we will stand between two tectonic plates and learn about Iceland’s early parliament history. Next, we will admire the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall as glacial water cascades dramatically into a deep canyon. We will then visit the Geysir geothermal area, where Strokkur will erupt high into the air in an impressive display of natural energy. At Fridheimar Greenhouse, we will discover how Icelanders grow fresh produce year-round using geothermal heat, and we will enjoy a unique farm-to-table experience. Our day will conclude at Kerid Crater, where we will gaze into a vivid volcanic caldera filled with a brilliant blue lake before returning to our hotel. | Selfoss or Hveragerdi Hotel |
| Day 4 | South Coast – Black Sand Beach – Glacier Hike | We will journey along Iceland’s spectacular South Coast, passing dramatic scenery shaped by fire and ice. At Reynisfjara black sand beach, we will walk along striking volcanic sands framed by towering basalt columns and powerful Atlantic waves. Later, we will embark on an exciting glacier hike led by professional guides, stepping onto ancient ice equipped with crampons and safety gear. As we explore deep crevasses and shimmering blue formations, we will learn about the science behind these massive ice caps. We will spend the night in the Hvolsvöllur area, surrounded by peaceful countryside and mountain views. | Hvolsvöllur Hotel |
| Day 5 | Lava Centre – Lava Tunnel – Hellisheidi Power Plant | We will begin the day at the Lava Centre, where interactive exhibits and immersive displays will teach us about Iceland’s earthquakes, eruptions, and volcanic systems. Next, we will venture into a fascinating lava tunnel, walking through an underground passage formed by flowing magma thousands of years ago. This unique experience will allow us to witness colorful rock formations and understand how lava shapes the land. We will also visit the Hellisheidi Power Plant, one of the world’s largest geothermal facilities, where we will learn how Iceland transforms natural heat into sustainable energy. After this educational and adventurous day, we will travel to the Borgarnes area for our overnight stay. | Borgarnes Hotel |
| Day 6 | Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Kirkjufell – Djupalonssandur – Bjarnahofn – Arnarstapi | We will dedicate the day to exploring the breathtaking Snaefellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” because of its diverse landscapes. We will stop at Kirkjufell, a beautifully shaped mountain that rises dramatically beside a picturesque waterfall. At Djupalonssandur, we will stroll along a black pebble beach surrounded by lava formations and remnants of historic shipwrecks. We will visit Bjarnahofn Shark Museum, where we will learn about Iceland’s maritime traditions and sample a traditional local delicacy. Our scenic exploration will conclude in Arnarstapi, where we will walk along rugged sea cliffs and admire spectacular ocean views before returning to Borgarnes. | Borgarnes Hotel |

Later, we will experience an unforgettable snorkeling adventure in crystal-clear glacial water, floating between two continental plates in one of the world’s most unique underwater environments. This was our daughter’s 2nd trip with Walking Tree. In 2018, she took her school’s first trip with Walking Tree to Ecuador, and absolutely loved it. Once again, the Walking Tree representative was excellent. My daughter said the leader really made the trip, and worked hard to keep the group happy. Other positives: communication before the trip, website outline, daily blogs and trip photos. Very professional organization. We feel very secure sending our student out into the world with Walking Tree.
