Hoy empezamos el día despediendonos de nuestras familias huéspedes y de la comunidad de Chimirol. Fue un momento muy emocional para las familias y los estudiantes de Deal. Después de esto, nos subimos en un bus y nos fuimos a comer un almuerzo en el restaurante Mirador don Roger. Tenía una vista increíble y comida muy deliciosa. Cuando terminamos de comer, nos fuimos a la playa Chaman donde nosotros estudiantes empezamos a aprender como hacer surf. Estuvimos ahí por 3 horas y todos los pasamos muy bien. Después de esto, muchos estudiantes compraron helado y fueron a la piscina del hotel en que nos estamos quedando. También nos pusimos cómodas en nuestros cuartos. Para terminar el día, nos fuimos a comer una cena en el restaurante del hotel.

Today we start the day by saying goodbye to our guest families and the community of Chimirol. It was a very emotional time for Deal families and students. After this, we got on a bus and went to eat lunch at the Mirador don Roger restaurant. It had an amazing view and very delicious food. When we finished eating, we went to Chaman beach where we students began to learn how to surf. We were there for 3 hours and we all had a great time. After this, many students bought ice cream and went to the pool of the hotel we are staying at. We also made ourselves comfortable in our rooms. To end the day, we went to have dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Hoy trabajamos en la remodelación de la cocina entre el patio de recreo y la escuela en chimirol. Empezamos preparando las superficies que luego pintaríamos con papel de lija. A veces fue difícil debido a las largas superficies que había que recorrer, pero nada es demasiado para nosotros. Dividimos el trabajo en partes iguales para garantizar que todo se pudiera hacer en una mañana. Después del almuerzo comenzamos a pintar el espacio comunitario cambiando algunos colores y manteniendo los colores que la comunidad ha llegado a amar. Todos estábamos esperando ansiosamente el evento de la noche, una gran fiesta con todos los miembros de la comunidad. A lo largo de este impactante día estuvimos rodeados de ideas de trabajo duro, trabajo en equipo y posibilidades. No sólo para nosotros sino también para la comunidad de Chimirol. Ninguno de nosotros olvidará estos últimos días que cambiaron nuestras vidas y llevaremos las lecciones que aprendimos para siempre.

Today we worked on refurnishing the kitchen room in between the playground and the school in chimirol. We started off by readying any surfaces that we would later paint with sand paper. It was difficult at times due to the lengthy surfaces needed to be covered, but nothing is too much for us. We divided work evenly to ensure that all could be done in one morning. After lunch we began to re paint the community space changing some colors and keeping the colors that the community has grown to love. We were all anxiously waiting for the event of the evening, a grand party with everyone in the community. Throughout this impactful day we were surrounded by ideas of hard work, teamwork, and possibilities. Not only for us but also the community of Chimirol. None of us will forget these past few life changing days and we will carry the lessons we learned forever.

Hoy trabajamos muy duro. Trabajamos en la cancha de fútbol y quitamos piedras y maleza. Hicimos esto para evitar que los niños tropezaran y cayeran. Luego hicimos un descanso con galletas y coca cola. También cada uno de nosotros plantamos un árbol y movimos muchas plantas para que esto sucediera. Cada uno tuvimos que cavar un hoyo y fue muy difícil pero hermoso al final. Fue muy lindo ver nuestro trabajo. Luego jugamos fútbol y baloncesto, ambos partidos quedaron empatados. De esta experiencia aprendimos que mientras trabajamos duro siempre debemos tener presente cómo esto impactará la vida de los niños en el futuro. Hoy imaginamos cómo crecerán los árboles y cómo los niños usarán el campo.

Today we worked very hard. We worked on the soccer field and removed rocks and weeds. We did this to prevent the kids from tripping and falling. We then had a break with cookies and coke. We also each planted a tree and moved lots of plants to make it happen. We each had to dig a hole and it was very difficult but beautiful in the end, it was very pretty seeing our work. We then played soccer and basketball, both games were ties. From this experience we learned that while working hard we must always keep in mind how this will impact the lives of the kids in the future. Today we envisioned how the trees will grow and how the kids will use the field.

El blog de hoy:

Hoy fue el primer dia en Chimirol. Todos llegamos a la escuela donde hacemos voluntarios. A las 8 inmediatamente nos dividimos en dos grupos para trabajar. El grupo uno saco las malas hierbas en la casa verde, mientras que el grupo dos comenzo a eliminar las plantas de un jardin escolar. Eventualmente, el grupo uno cambia para ayudar al grupo dos, ya que las plantas eran dificiles de quitar incluso con picos y palas. Luego, alrededor de las 12, almorzamos que nos dieron nuestras familias anfitrionas y comimos en un centro comunitario. Luego, durante la segunda parte del dia, todos nos reagrupamos. Los chicos fueron a llenar el area que limpiado de plantas invasoras con piedras para nivelar el suelo y las ninas pintaron llantas, paredes y decoraciones alrededor de la escuela. Las chicas tambien se detuvieron durante 15 minutos en un aula para responder a las preguntas que los estudiantes costarricenses tenian para nosotros. Luego jugamos con los estudiantes hasta que nuestras familias vinieran a recogernos.

Today was the first day in Vhimirol. We all got to the school where we were volunteering, at 8 and immediate split into two groups to work. Group one pulled weeds in the green house while group two got started to remove invasive plant from a school garden. Eventually, group one shifted to help group two as the plants were difficult to remove even with pickaxes and shovels. Then around 12, we ate lunch that were given by our host families and ate in a community center. Then for the second part of the day we all regrouped. The boys went to fill the area we cleared of invasive plants with stones to level the ground and the girls painted tires, walls and decor around the school. The girls also stopped for 15 minutes to a classroom to answer the questions the Costa rican students had for us. Then played with the students until our host families come too pick us up.

Hoy fui un dia muy largo y muy emocionante, lleno de diversion y gente nuevas. Empecimos nuestro di­a en una finca, y comimos un desayuno delicioso antes que fuimos a empezar nuestro viaje a la catarata que visitamos hoy. Cuando lleguemos a el parque con la catarata, tuvimos jus de maricuja, una experiencia nueva para casi todos. Despues, empecemos la camina a la catarata, un tiempo que muchos usaban para apreciar la naturaleza hermosa de Costa Rica. La catarata fue muy bonita, y la agua fue un lugar donde todos tenian un tiempo genial jugando. Despues de un almuerzo relajante, empecemos y colectar nuestras cosas para un viaje largo a Chimirol lleno de musica y alegre. Cuando lleguemos a nuestra destinacion, reunimos con las familias que son increibles. Despues de eso, no puedo hablar para todos pero yo se que soy muy feliz a tener la oportunidad a aprender mas sobre la cultura de Costa Rica! Todo en todo, fue un di­a genial!

Today was a very long and very exciting day, full of fun and new people. We started our day at a farm, and had a delicious breakfast before we went to begin our trip to the waterfall we visited today. When we get to the park with the waterfall, we drank maricuja juice, a new experience for almost everyone. Afterwards, we begin the hike to the waterfall, a time that we all used to appreciate the beautiful nature of Costa Rica. The waterfall was very pretty, and the water was a place where everyone had a great time playing. After a relaxing lunch, we got started back to the bus and getjered our things for a long trip to Chimirol full of music and joy. When we arrive at our destination, we met with the families who we’re staying with. After that, we can’t speak for everyone but we know that we am very happy to have the opportunity to learn more about Costa Rican culture! All in all, it was a great day!

Hoy nos fuimos de las bellas Villas Aracari hacia un nuevo hospedaje cerca del pacifico. Embarcamos en un paseo en bus de un par de horas donde tuvimos la oportunidad de dormir, cantar y compartir. Paramos a ver cocodrilos gigantes y pajaros diversos y unicos cerca de rios y de la playa incluyendo el rio Tarcoles que es uno de los mas sucios de Centro America y a casi nada de distancia el Savegre que es uno de los mas limpios. Seguimos nuestro paseo en carro y pasamos enfrente de las playas del pacifico donde las aguas tienen un color espectacular y una cultura muy . Paramos a un supermercado donde tuvimos la oportunidad de saborear comidas y caramelos de Costa Rica. Llegamos a nuestro hospedaje que tiene unas vistas increibles del mar y que se encuentra en una finca con una cantidad imensa de flora y fauna. La familia de la finca de al lado nos mostraron y ensenaron la tierra donde crecen frutas, plantas medicinales, cafe, chocolate, arboles, y mucho mas. Hicimos un curso de empanadas y de chocolate celiente hecho de cacao molido producido en la finca. Nos reunimos para reflecionar sobre nuestro dia y para coordinar la salida mañana a una cascada y a las familias que nos esperan en Chimirol.

Today we left the beautiful Villas Aracari for a farm close to the pacific. We started on a long bus ride where we slept, sung and talked to friends. Our first stop was to see some huge crocodiles and birds. We saw the Taracole River which is the most dirty river in Costa Rica and Central America. A few minutes later we saw one of the most clean rivers which is called the Savegre. On the next stage of the trip we saw beaches which were are part of the Pacific Ocean. We made a stop at a super market were we got to try Costa Rican candy and snacks. We then arrived at the farm where we will be staying tonight. The owners of the farm showed us many plants and animals. We then had a class on how to make empanadas and we tried Costa Rican coffee and chocolate. We ended off the day with a reflection and preparation for tomorrow when we will be going to Chimirol to meet the host families who are awaiting our arrival.

Blog 1: First Day in Costa Rica!

The first day in Costa Rica consisted of rafting and learning the process of making chocolate. During the rafting trip we stopped to get some delicious fruits like watermelon and pineapple, and tried the local treat of sandwiching a coconut cookie with the pineapples. Later that day we went back on the bus to start to go back to our hotel and we stopped to look at a beautiful waterfall.  As we got home we all gathered in the dining room were we later learned about chocolate and how to make it starting from the Cacao seed and finishing up with the purest forms of chocolate. Learning about the thousand of years old indigenous traditions was truly beautiful.  All in all today was a cultural enriching experience and we can’t wait to see what the days ahead of us hold.

El primer día aquí en Costa Rica consistió en hacer rafting y aprender el proceso de hacer chocolate. Durante la viajen de rafting nosotros paramos para comer algunas frutas deliciosas como piña y melón y también probamos galletas de coco con piña. Más tarde en el día, subimos el autobús de nuevo y empezamos a ir a casa, y paramos en el camino para ver una cascada muy bonita. Cuando llegamos en casa, todos fuimos al comedor para aprender sobre el chocolate y cómo hacerlo empezando con la fruta de cacao, terminando con las formas más puras de chocolate. Aprender sobre miles de años de tradiciones indígenas fue muy bonito. Todo las cosas hoy fueron una experiencia cultural increíble y no podemos esperar a las cosas que traerán los próximos días
