Today was a big day because it was Sascha’s birthday! We started the morning with an early wake up at 6am to head out to breakfast at 7 at a local boulangerie followed by an hour and a half train ride to Bayeux. Once we arrived, we headed to a bike shop where we did a 22 mile bike ride to the D-Day beaches. After our long day, we headed to our hotel and then went to the town’s Medieval fair. We ended the with dinner at a crêperie and a good nights rest.

Today we got up bright and early to head by train to Giverny. Sascha, “retiring from his job”, made it up to us to navigate through the streets and metro, though always keeping a close eye to ensure we didn’t stray too far. We made it just in time to get on the train, and an hour later we were in Giverny! Once there we slowly made our way through the town, stopping by Claude Monet’s tomb and gazing at the stunning surroundings. Beautifully, every wall, fence, and floor was covered in bright flowers. And once at the gardens, this beauty was exaggerated more! We split into smaller groups and wandered on our own, exploring the rest of the garden, including Monet’s home and, of course, his famous waterlily pond. We then explored more of the town, having a nice lunch with some special visitors (chickens with silly haircuts). Finally, we left to go back to Paris. We then had some free time in the city before dinner. Dinner was divine. We finally headed back to get some much needed rest.

We woke up at 6 am to leave our hotel at 6:30 sharp. We hauled our luggage to the metro and then the train station, where we endured a four hour train ride to Normandy. But it was all well worth it when we stored our luggage, ate fresh bakery sandwiches and pastries, took a quick shuttle to Mont St. Michel monastery, and got to take in the gorgeous views of Normandy. The slight mist and cooler of the hilly countryside is definitely a change of scenery compared to the bustling streets of Paris.

On our second day, we ventured to Versailles where we were able to bring what we have learned in the classroom to life. As we toured the magnificent halls of the palace, the vast magnitude of the area left us in awe. The breathtaking gardens and captivating art gave a delicious perspective into a period of French History in a way that we have never seen before. With activities like rowing, speaking with natives of the area and exploring the marvelous gardens, we not only learned a lot but we had fun on the way. We finished our packed day with a visit to the glorious Eiffel Tower in a nighttime boat tour down the River Seine. The students took many pictures and went back to the hotel for a well deserved night of rest.

Today we had a delightful day in the Montmartre district exploring the local cuisine and architecture. We visited a sandwich shop and had free time to take a lovely stroll around Sacré-Cœur. After checking into the hotel, we headed to dinner La Fraternité, where Aayan and I ordered the beef tartare. We headed back and I enjoyed a restful night of sleep with my five roommates.
