Day 5

Written by Cami

This morning we jumped out of bed and ran into breakfast because we all slept in a little! I sat with Kali and watched the humming birds, then ran back up to my room with Annabelle to get our journals. At breakfast we had pancakes and other stuff. After breakfast we rode in the back of trucks to where we work on the house. Today we finished up painting, varnishing, and cementing. I painted and varnished for most of the day, and occasionally got to cement. Lastly, Annabelle and I got to paint the whole bathroom white, which was really fun. For a reward for working so hard, we got ice cream and went swimming in a river. After showering we ate dinner and went on an owl walk. We didn’t see any owls, but we had a great time.

For breakfast we had the eggs and quimbolito. Quimbolito is like a cake tamale but really sweet. Then we headed to our service project. At our service project we split in to three groups. One group cleaned the ceiling one group washed bamboo and the other group scraped off paint. Then we cleaned up so we could eat lunch. For lunch we had sandwiches and pineapple cake. After lunch we started painting, concrete, and varnishing for the house. We also met a dog, the girls named him happy and the boys named him Remy but his actual name was Lucas, he hung out with us most of the day. After we were done for the day we got ice cream, saw happy again, and played soccer. First we played World Cup then we saw a local Ecuadorian soccer team and went against them, we won 5-2 which was really unexpected because they were really good. Finally we went back to the hotel had dinner and went to bed.

Today we ate a lovely breakfast at Las Palmeras Inn im Oatavalo. We then took a 3 hour bus ride to the Eco Lodge in Nanagal. It is a beautiful hotel deep in the forest. It is a conservation area for Osos de anteojos. We went on a long hike in the rain and got drenched to the bone. It was very fun and muddy. Dinner and desert were amazing. After dinner we journaled and wrote letters.

Today we started by waiking up at the beautiful Hotel in the beautiful Andes! We woke up with the sun up and an amazing breakfast. We followed this with a two hour ride to Peguche where we had the chance to see and listen to Amazon Andean music. We built Pallas a simple Andean instrument made with little local Bamboos of different size. The family was very kind and served us lunch, they gave us “Cuy” of fired Guinea pig! Also we had local grains, corn and tubers. From here we made our way to a huge waterfall and the we went to OTAVALO. There we looked through different shops which gave us a perfect chance to practice our Spanish!
I bought a poncho along with some shrunken heads… finally we got to the hotel we are now and looked at the llamas. Don’t worry, me and Jake plan to open a restaurant “CFC” back in Colorado that sells Cuy!

A blog for day 1

It was an amazing experience the next day because we got to go to penuche (A town i in Ecuador) and see several churches and go to the top floor of both of them. They both had amazing views from the top. During those tours we got to learn about their history. A few legends were told about the churches like how a person named Cantuna, had to build the church in a little amount of time. Too little. Once he began running out of time he had called upon the devil to ask for help. The devil had told him that he had to sell his soul to him for him and his demons to build it for him. Cantuna then realized how much he cherished his soul so then he stole a stone from the church and hids it from the devil. The devil had not realized, so once he was “finished” the devil had requested for Cantuna’s soul but Cantuna had told him he wasn’t finished since he had the stone. The devil then went back to hell. The other legends were also all very interesting. After our tours, I had fun chasing some birds. After a few minutes of scaring them, they all flew in the air and did circles above us. Once we got to the hotels, we relaxed in the rooms for a little then went to go eat only a walk away from the hotel. After dinner, we played infection in the dark. It was really fun and really scary. Then, we went to bed and I had the best sleep of my life.
