Having abolished its military over 50 years ago, this tiny democratic republic has long been known for its pacifism, commitment to environmental protection, and its status as a destination for those seeking safe yet exciting adventure travel set against breathtaking scenery. However, despite an extensive tourism industry, in many parts of Costa Rica there remains a need for help and service. Cultural Journeys provide deep insight into the history, culture, and natural heritage of our host countries through authentic immersive experiences. Students will explore ancient ruins, sample new foods, and develop valuable leadership skills.

We work hard to create safe, engaging, and immersive itineraries for our travelers, but given the unpredictable nature of international travel we must remain flexible in our planning. Changes to a schedule are uncommon but if inclement weather pushes us off course or an unexpected opportunity arises which travelers are excited about, we reserve the right to adjust programming in the best interest of the group.
|1||Minneapolis - Alajuela||Today the group will travel from the USA to Costa Rica, with the flight usually arriving in the evening. After arrival, the group will settle into their hotel for the evening and have an orientation meeting where the group will discuss the upcoming trip in detail.||Casa Cielo Grande|
|2||Alajuela - Pura Suerte||Our journey begins at Pura Suerte, which is 4 hours away from Alajuela, and is a beautiful ecological farm deep in the southern rain forest of the country. Upon arrival at Pura Suerte we will tour the farm on a hand on experience that involves tropical fruits and farm animals as well as a nearby coffee plantation that produces some of the best beans in the area. We will learn about the importance of organic farming and how rural farmers are taking advantage of sustainable farming practices. Throughout the program, we'll have the opportunity to interact with community members in Spanish, participate in cultural exchanges, and explore Costa Rican culture.||Jungalows|
|3||Pura Suerte||In the morning we will hike down to Nauyaca waterfall, a spectacular three-story waterfall not far from the farm. We will spend the day here, getting to know one another, swimming and taking in the natural beauty of the jungle. After lunch by the river we will return to the farm for a cooking class, we will make tortillas, empanadas and picadillo. After dinner we will enjoy a relaxing evening.||Jungalows|
|4||Pura Suerte - Manuel Antonio||Today we will make our way to the Central Pacific coast. We will spend the afternoon having private surf lessons from some of Costa Rica's best surfers in Manuel Antonio. Never surfed before? No problem! The waves at Manuel Antonio are perfect for beginners and almost everyone is able to stand up. After, we will visit one of the most stunning national parks in the country. We will have time to enjoy what many call Costa Rica's most beautiful beach, hike through the national park and spend time surrounded by monkeys. In the evening, we will have some down time at the hotel pool to relax.||Villas Mymosa|
|5||Manuel Antonio - La Fortuna||After a free morning at the beach, we will head to La Fortuna, home of Costa Rica's most famous volcano, Volcán Arenal. We will have time to relax at the hotsprings, which are heated directly from the veins of the volcano. We will also have buffet style dinner.||Hotel La Fortuna|
|6||La Fortuna||Today the group will hike to La Catarata de la Fortuna for a refreshing swim at the base of the magnificent waterfall that cascades from a height of over 70 meters. The adventure continues with some zip-lining across the lush tropical rainforest's canopy. The rest of the afternoon will be a good time to do some souvenir shopping.||Hotel La Fortuna|
|7||La Fortuna - Sarapiqui||Today the group will travel to Sarapiqui, an area reknown forits rivers and lush tropical forests. By the time of arrival the group will have a hands-on experience on the chocolate making process, from the seed to the chocolate bar the students will engage their 5 senses.||Chilamate Rainforest|
|8||Sarapiqui||This morning, the group will go down the Sarapiqui river on a white water rafting adventure. In the afternoon a salsa class awaits, we will learn salsa, bachata, merengue and swing criollo.||Chilamate Rainforest|
|9||Sarapiqui - Alajuela||The final day of the trip will consist of a relaxed morning and departure to Alajuela, where we will visit the Central Market and walk around the city. Our time in Costa Rica will be concluded in Alajuela for a final dinner together.||Casa Cielo Grande|
|10||Alajuela - Minneapolis||After breakfast, we will head to the airport for a morning departure back to the USA.||Your own bed!|
In order to provide a safe and memorable experience for travelers, we follow strict guidelines when choosing our accommodations. Walking Tree partners with locally-operated, three-star equivalent hotels which are centrally located, clean, safe and wifi-enabled.
Hotel Casa Cielo Grande
Casa Cielo Grande is a beautiful property ideally located twenty minutes away from the airport. Close to the city center yet high in the mountains, the views of the Central Valley are breathtaking and the pool is stunning. Perfect for groups, the house offers clean and fresh rooms that will make you feel at home as soon as you land in Costa Rica. Students will have free Wi-Fi access and will be grouped in their rooms according to gender and availability.
Finca Pura Suerte
Situated high on the hills overlooking the Pacific coast, the open-air cabins of Pura Suerte are the ideal accommodation for exploring the surrounding farm, primary forest, and countless waterways. This comfortable setting is a center where ideas can be exchanged and practiced to promote sustainable living. Students will be grouped in their rooms according to gender and availability. There will be no internet access during this portion of the trip.
Hotel Villas Mymosa is a modern 10 room condo hotel located in the peaceful setting of beautiful Manuel Antonio. These spacious rooms are fully equipped to provide you with all the amenities of your own home. Each Villas Mymosa villa has a private terrace or balcony or both. You have the option of peace and quiet at your villa or interacting with other guests around our beautiful large centrally located pool. Free Wi-Fi will keep everyone feeling connected. Students will be grouped in their rooms according to gender.

In order to give our travelers the best possible price, we break out airfare from the Program Tuition. We will still handle all booking and ticketing via our flight partner who has access to special fares not available to the general public. You will be invoiced for the flight once we are able to secure the group’s airline contract.
