Mexico

Mexico’s perfect white sand beaches, rugged canyons, tropical jungles, and arid plains are inhabited by some of the nicest people you'll meet, all of whom arguably enjoy the world’s best food. Between her megacities, colonial hamlets, and seaside villages, our neighbor to the south offers so much, yet few visitors ever experience the real Mexico. Our programs show travelers the authentic fabric of the country, from the highlands of Oaxaca to the food stalls of Mexico City and across the centuries of history when the area was dominated by a host of remarkable pre-Colombian cultures whose influence is still visible today.  With traveler safety foremost in mind, we will challenge students to view Mexico in a new light and reward them with the adventure of a lifetime.

We recognize the extraordinary role that meaningful international travel can play in shaping the lives of young people, and strive to create itineraries which push travelers to see themselves and the places they visit in a new and exciting light.

Walking Tree Travel specializes in customized group travel. The itinerary below is from a recent program and is provided here as an example of just one of many experiences that are possible in this destination.

Today we fly to Mexico City! After our arrival, we'll travel into the heart of the centro historico where our hotel lies just a block off the Zocalo. One of the most dynamic cities in all of Latin America, we're perfectly placed to enjoy the best Mexico City has to offer. Upon arrival we'll check in to our hotel, do a bit of exploring, eat dinner and hold a short orientation meeting to prepare for our upcoming adventure. Then, it's time to rest after a long day of travel.

After breakfast we're off to explore Mexico City's famous Zocalo and National Palace, home to Diego Rivers's world-renowned murals. Then, we will take the metro to the quiet southern neighborhood of Coyoacán. Here, we will have a delicious lunch of tostadas inside the Coyoacán market, enjoy time for shopping and people watching around the main square. Tonight it's Lucha Libre match at the famed Arena Mexico. After the match we will travel back in the direction of our hotel, stopping for dinner en route, before settling in to our hotel to rest up for tomorrow's departure to IPODERAC.

Today we will depart the Mexican capital for IPODERAC (IPO), the home for abandoned boys that will be our base for six nights. En route, we will stop in Cholula, a small town with great food and a famous pyramid that we will get to tour both inside and out. After experiencing Cholula from the top of the church high above the city, we will head on to IPODERAC for our orientation and become acquainted with our new friends.

After a group breakfast, we will begin our service project (tbd). We will work as a group while the boys at IPO (chavos) are at school. We will break for a mid-morning snack and work until lunch. Afterwards, we will join the chavos in afternoon activities, games and bonding. During the evening we will have free time for journaling, reflection meetings or more fun games.

Today our group will invite the whole community of IPODERAC (chavos and staff) to a local waterpark to celebrate our time together. We will swim, ride the water slides, have a ranchero-style cookout, play soccer, and relax. We will return to IPO to pack up, clean our house and say our goodbyes in the evening.

After we leave IPO early in the morning, we will stop at the pyramids of Teotihuacán en route Mexico City.

Upon arrival to Mexico City, we will explore the neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa before enjohing our going away dinner!

After breakfast at our hotel, we will walk through the downtown area and ride to the top of the towering Torre Latinoamericana to take in the massive city from above. After a final meal of delicious tacos, we will meet on the hotel rooftop for a final reflection session before heading to the airport for our flight home to the US.
