How do you think your stuff was made? What natural resources needed to be extracted in order to make the items in your home?<\/li>\n<li>Find 20 items in your home that have the \u201cMade In\u201d label or sticker on them. Using your notebook, write down the place where each item is made and answer the following questions:\n<ul>\n<li>How many different countries did you find?<\/li>\n<li>How many of the items were made in the US versus overseas?<\/li>\n<li>Were you surprised at how many or how few countries were represented?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Think about how much work had to go into getting the stuff all the way to your house.\n<ul>\n<li>How far did it have to travel?<\/li>\n<li>How many different people or factories may have worked on these items?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Look closely at what the items are made out of.\n<ul>\n<li>What natural resource is most common in the products that you\u2019ve collected? For example: cotton, plastic (oil), etc.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-59831-0-1-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3><strong>Take Away Points<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cMade In\u201d label often doesn\u2019t tell the whole story. Resources from all over the world are used and collected, then made in the location specified on those labels. That label just tells us just a small part of the story of your stuff.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBuying local\u201d is an important step in reducing your carbon footprint, but buying used clothes and items from thrift stores and garage sales is an even more effective way to reduce your impact.
