This will prepare you to start recognizing and appreciating cultural differences in others.<\/p>\n<h3><b>How You Do It<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a look at the\u00a0Cultural Identity Wheel worksheet\u00a0by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/walkingtree.org\/uploads\/2018\/09\/GLC-Activity-4-Culture-Wheel-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clicking HERE<\/a><\/em>\u00a0, and print the wheel\u00a0if at all possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill in the different sections with phrases that you identify with or relate to. For example, in the family section, someone might write \u201cdaughter\u201d or \u201cbrother\u201d or \u201celdest child.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use your wheel to create a full picture of your personal and cultural identity, but there is no need to fill in every section if you don\u2019t feel that it applies to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Once you have completed the wheel, ask yourself the following questions, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>What, if anything, surprised you during this activity?<\/li>\n<li>How might your social identity shape your perspective?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think sharing elements of your identity in a different cultural context could affect how people interact with you? For example, certain cultures may be sensitive to specific religions or nationalities and may react in a particular way \u2013 be it positively or negatively \u2013 \u00a0if they learn about this part of your identity. Can you think of other examples?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-56593-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3><strong>Take Away Points<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>An awareness of the cultural patterns and identities that shape your perspective will help you to notice the cultural patterns of people you meet while you\u2019re abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone is comprised of unique cultural and personal elements even when we may come from the same \"culture\" or nation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You will need to make choices about how and with whom you share certain elements of your\u00a0cultural identity.
