This exercise should help you appreciate the distinction between what we actually see (description), the layers of meaning that we add (interpretation), and our value judgements (analysis).<\/p>\n<p>DESCRIPTION: What I See (only observed facts)<br \/>\nINTERPRETATION: What I Think (about what I see)<br \/>\nANALYSIS: What I Feel (value judgements, positive or negative)<\/p>\n<h3><b>How You Do It<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a look at each photo on the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/walkingtree.org\/uploads\/2019\/08\/GLA-Activity-3-DIA-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D.I.A. Images Worksheet\u00a0by clicking HERE<\/a><\/em><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/old.walkingtree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/WTT-Activity-3-PDF-D.I.A-Images-Separate.pdf\" rel=\"\">.<\/a>\u00a0Focus\u00a0on only one photo at a time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Write down everything you can about the photo. Be as detailed as you can be. If possible, explain aloud to a friend or family member as you write it down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Look back at all of the points you wrote about the photo. Try to categorize which of those statements are truly objective\u00a0<i>descriptions<\/i>\u00a0of the image, which have added\u00a0<i>interpretation\u00a0<\/i>or perception of the image, and which are judgements or\u00a0<i>analyses<\/i>\u00a0you have made about what\u2019s going on in the image. See examples below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of Possible Statements:<br \/>\n\u2013 Description: \u00a0I can see a woman carrying straw and a man smoking.<br \/>\n\u2013 Interpretation: The woman is tired.<br \/>\n\u2013 Analysis: It is horrible that the man is making her carry the straw while he smokes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After categorizing your own statements about each photo, ask yourself the following questions and write down your answers:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHow else could I describe it?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow else could I interpret it?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHow else could I analyze\u00a0it?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-56583-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3><strong>Take Away Points<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of us tend to do all three (describe, interpret, and analyze) at once, without really thinking about it. We tend to assume that our evaluations are objective truths, instead of just one of many possible meanings that could be attributed to what we see.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Our brains open up to additional possibilities when we describe what we see before interpreting and evaluating it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>How we describe, interpret, and analyze\u00a0is shaped by our life experiences and cultural vantage points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Try not to get frustrated or disheartened if this concept is challenging for you to wrap your head around, or if you\u00a0have trouble seeing the difference between describing, interpreting, and analyzing.
